Matthew and Gunnar Nelson Set To Play Concert in Honor of Dad

Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, the latest stars in one of America’s great entertainment dynasties, will pay tribute to their rock and roll pioneer father Ricky with a show at Norfolk’s Infinity Hall on Sunday, June 7.

The “Ricky Nelson Remembered” show will consist of the twins, who had their own string of hits in the early 1990’s as the glam-pop band Nelson, will perform some of Ricky’s dozens of classics such as ““Hello Mary Lou”, “Poor Little Fool”, “Travelin’ Man” and “A Teenager’s Romance.”

“Every other song is a Ricky Nelson Top three or above,” said Gunnar Nelson, who was reached via telephone during a fishing trip in Nevada. “The hardest thing is to cut the set down so we’re not playing for three or four hours.”

The brothers began incorporating their father’s songs into their own sets about four or five years ago, said Gunnar, but the show dedicated entirely to him got off the ground only in the last year.

The show takes the form of not only a concert but a kind of documentary, as excerpts from TV programs such as “Behind the Music” tell Ricky’s incredible life story between songs.

“It helps us tell the story. It’s really an audio-visual thing - like a cross between an A&E biography and a rock concert. People really do appreciate the extra proudction value,” said Gunnar.

The elder Nelson, who died tragically in a 1985 New Year’s Eve plane crash, got his start performing on the longest running live action sitcom in history, 1950s and ’60s phenomenon “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” playing the rock and rolling teenage son of his real-life parents Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. The show was immensely popular, and while playing the son of his actual parents wasn’t a stretch, the musician aspect of his role fit him perfectly.

He began performing a song to conclude each episode, and his Elvis-influenced rockabilly style turned Nelson into an instant hitmaker and full-fledged teen idol. He continued a run of hits until the mid-1960’s, when he faded a bit and turned to a more country-based sound, which earned him a brief resurgence on the charts.

Nevertheless, his legacy is still thriving, as his more than 50 Top 100 hits earned him induction into the Hall of Fame in 1987, and “Rolling Stone” named him one of their 100 greatest artists of all time in 2004.

Matthew and Gunnar also perform one original song, “Just Once More,” which they wrote for their father.

“It’s not only a catharsis but its a panacea - that’s what music is all about” said Gunnar, adding that his favorite song of his father’s to perform is “Lonesome Town.”

The “Ricky Nelson Remembered” show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $45, $35 and $30. To purchase tickets, visit www.infinityhall.com or call the box office at 1-866-666-6306.
